The Most Common Mistake in Teaching Letter Sounds

Hi Parents!

Do you know the most common error in teaching a child the letter sounds?

It is accidentally adding the "uh" sound to a letter.

For example, the letter Tt is pronounced as "t" and not "tuh."

Or the letter Ll is pronounced as "lll" and not "luh."

To illustrate how incorrectly adding the "uh" sound can interfere with reading, I will tell you the "Palace Story."

Once I was tutoring a little boy and he had to read a simple word, pals.

Pals, as in friends.

But when he read the word he kept saying "palace." At first I couldn't understand why he thought the word was palace.

Then I realized that he pronounced the Ll wrong.

Instead of "lll" he said "luh."

So the word pals became "paluhs" (palace).

This problem can be avoided by correctly isolating letter sounds so that the child hears them as they actually appear in words.
